Deauville..... 05/11/2010
The drive from Honfleur to Deauville was breathtaking. The trees were green and lush signaling us to our destination. As we wound our way to the coast, we were greeted by hillsides dappled with small farms, cows grazing and paint strokes of bright yellow fields. Deauville was utterly beautiful. This is the town where wealthy Parisians have flocked to for years. Our first glimpse was of a stunning village lined with old homes perched on hilltops, standing with confidence on the coastline, and sitting snug next to their neighbors in the city center. Deauville is clean and chic; well thought out flowers beds surround every "round about" and fountain. The beauty that wraps most every town in France will forever surprise me. So much beauty in one small country, how can it be? It doesn't seem fair. The streets gave way to a sense of calmness and peace. Everyone seemed relaxed, strolling down the sidewalks. I heard little else but the French language. It was clear, that the French have kept this little village a secret. I wonder how long it will last? Peaking through garden gates and out our hotel window is mandatory in my book. I can't resist. The sea called us early Sunday morning. We woke to a blanket of fog that lifted by 9am. We drove five minutes and were at the shore. Slides and swings were sprinkled here and there for the children. A long boardwalk brought us face to face with "old money". I will leave you with the sounds of waves crashing, seagulls flying overhead and the smell of salwater....... Tomorrow we will go back to our hotel. It is worth an entire days post. CommentsElizabeth Tue, 11 May 2010 06:33:05 B.U.T.FULL! Tue, 11 May 2010 09:54:24 GINA!!! I am oohing and ahhing all over the place. Better not let the Frenchies know that you let the Deauville cat out of the bag. How gorgeous and I am sorry we missed this spot...it now goes on the "for another day" travel wish list. Tue, 11 May 2010 11:03:21 If only our beach towns could look so amazing. Instead we have circa 1950/1970 and a little run down. Except for maybe Santa Barbara, California. Sigh! Now only if I spoke French, I just might want to live in this town. Tue, 11 May 2010 12:14:56 Oh what a pleasure this place is. I think the French must be very good at keeping their secrets. I've known about Deauville since forever. It's truly one of those dream places. It was very nice getting a virtual taste of Deauville through your eyes. Wed, 12 May 2010 06:05:41 That looks like a little piece of heaven. And is that sunshine in your photos? It looks like winter is long forgotten and here in Aus I am resorting to bed socks and cardigans... Brrrrrrr!!! Aunt Sally Wed, 12 May 2010 22:31:58 Happy Mother's day sweet girl. I am so jealous, I wish I could be on that cool swing with the kids!! When you spoke of the sometimes trying days of "mothering" it reminded me of Grandma Swanson - I could hear her as if she was sitting on my shoulder whispering in my ear.....enjoy every minute while they are young Sally, they grow so fast. Don't wish for them to be older, enjoy today......or words to that effect. Wise woman, so full of love. You dear Gina are doing a grand job.....but then look at your example.
